Dr. Smith graduated with a degree in naturopathic medicine from Nation College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) in Portland, Ore. in1992.  He has been practicing in Alaska even since, being part of the staff at Fireweed Health Care, Natural Health Center and now at Avante Medical Center.

Dr. Smith lives in Anchorage with his wife Leesha and six children, most of whom are now on their own expect for 16-year-old, Max and 5-year-old, Nick.  He is an accomplished musician having played the guitar for 30 years.

Dr. Smith loves utilizing the naturopathic tools to care for the whole person.  This includes using nutrients, western herbs and Chinese medicine, body biochemistry and the latest in scientific medical studies.  He enjoys research and is always learning and studying.

He got into naturopathic medicine after taking care of his frail, arthritic grandmother in the 70’s and realizing that there had to be a better way than the medicine they were giving her which had horrible side effects.

They make a conventional Western diagnosis using standard diagnostic procedures such as physical examination, laboratory tests, and radiology. However, they also make a pathophysiologic diagnosis using physical and laboratory procedures to assess nutritional status, metabolic function and toxic load. Naturopathic medicine concentrates on whole-patient. wellness-the medicine is tailored to the patient and emphasizes prevention and self-care.  Naturopathic medicine attempts to find the underlying cause of the patient’s condition rather than focusing solely on symptomatic treatment.  Naturopathic doctors cooperate with all other branches of medical science referring patients to other practitioners for diagnosis or treatment when appropriate."
